Rottnest Island & a Boat Trip…

Earlier in the week we spent two days on Rottnest Island, which is 30 minutes by ferry off the coast of Perth.

Rottnest is a car-free island, so the only means of transport are bikes. Which meant after two days on the old push iron, we were feeling it in the buttock area.

However, by bike was the perfect way to see what an unspoilt island this is. I have never seen such turquoise waters, and so many empty beaches.

We also made the leg burning trip up to Wadjemup Lighthouse in the middle of the island, which gave brilliant views over the islands salt lakes and bush land.

Two days exploring was definately enough, but I can see why so many locals make Rottnest their summer holiday destination. To visit the island during school holidays you have to enter a ballot, which shows how popular it is.

Yesterday we went on a trial scuba dive, which took us into the waters on Palm beach and down to two plane wrecks and a ship wreck.

Me and Vic all Scuba’d up and ready for shipwrecks…

Once we’d squeezed ourselves into our wetsuits and yet again signed a form just in case we died, we made our way down to the beach to practise equalizing in the water. We couldn’t have picked a day with worse weather conditions. Once I’d finned up it was impossible to stay in the same spot, and i was being dragged by the current.

Once I’d got my balance we spent an hour pracitsing what to do if we got water in our masks,I had a problem with getting my breathing right under water and was very close to chickening out. I didn’t however and am glad as this was another fantastic moment of the trip. I got to hold a sea cucumber, which looked like a wrinkly slug. And hand feed some fish a muscle, until one of them thought my finger looked tastier.

The same day, following on with the ocean theme, Mick Dundee (Uncle Michael) took us out on his boat…

We got all the way to Garden Island before Skipper Mick remembered he’d forgot the life jackets!

Skipper Mick and his boat…

Just as he was about to spin the boat round, we noticed one of our old Dolphin pals at the side of the boat. Now swimming with them was one thing, as we expected to see them. But this moment was quite special, no groups of tourists, just us and the dolphin, which definitely wanted to play…

Well, tonight is our last night in Rockingham, we fly back home tomorrow afternoon. So this will be the final blog post!

Whatever will you do without your weekly woods-downunder fix?

Hope everyone is well! See you all next week!

Love Cara & Vic xx
